SCENARIO 1: Searching . . .

Maya is a young architecture professional who is passionate about her work - she wants to grow in her career and dreams of opening her own practice one day. She works in a small office where everyone is seemingly busy and overwhelmed, so she is hesitant to reach out for guidance/advice.

SCENARIO 2: Networking . . .

Maya scrolls through her connections on LinkedIn, AIA, NOMA, and messages a few people who she admires and wants to connect with for guidance. She's a little hesitant while doing this because she doesn't want to make a bad impression or get rejected.

SCENARIO 3: Initial Meeting. . .

Maya is excited to meet this potential mentor, Andrew, and is eager to share her thoughts with him. The first meeting is a little awkward, and once they start to chat about their goals Maya realizes she can't relate to him in some ways. But she wants to give it a try because he has so much valuable experience in the industry, and is willing to give his time.

SCENARIO 4: Setting Goals. . .

In future meetings, Maya tries to develop a plan with Andrew to achieve her career goals. Andrew can't give clear advice because he can't relate to career goals or her perspective as a woman of color. Andrew feels helpless as a mentor, and Maya feels discouraged.

SCENARIO 5: Evaluation . . .

Over time, Maya stops reaching out to Andrew because she doesn't feel like she is getting much out of the conversation. She feels frustrated that she puts so much effort into this relationship, and is starting to doubt whether her goals are even feasible.
